Rethink Breast Cancer - Your Man Reminder

There are many different organizations who are a part of the breast cancer cause. One of the greatest challenges is trying to reach everyone we need to in a way that will resonate with all of them. At the same time, it is difficult to "please all of the people, all of the time". Using different approaches to reach different demographics can prove difficult at times. ReThink Breast Cancer has been behind the creation of some new, innovative and controversial campaigns. I took a look at analyzing YouTube and Social Mention to see how ReThink's Man Reminder App has been perceived. I'd love to know how you feel about this promotion and if you downloaded the App, please leave a comment below.

One of the most "creative" concepts is the Man Reminders. You can check out the Man Reminder below:

This video has over 6 million views! Ladies, you can probably see why. However, this concept has received some flack from some as being insensitive and for trivializing the topic of breast cancer. Again, you can't please everyone and ReThink may have found a way to reach an audience they were missing before. Let's take a look at what is being said on Social Mention..

Sentiment shows the ratio of positive comments vs negative comments. 38:1 is a highly positive sentiment. The breakdown of the comments for sentiment is below. This further shows how many positive/neutral comments vs negative.

I also find the 44% for passion interesting as it rates the likelihood that those who are talking about you will do so again. Not surprising though as those who are talking about breast cancer tend to be quite passionate about it.

Here are a few people talking about the Man Reminders:

New Screening Mammography Guidelines for BC

Vancouver. BC  - The BC Cancer Agency announces revised screening policy for breast cancer which emphasizes women making an informed choice. Women in their 40's are encouraged to speak to their doctor in order to understand the limitations of mammography, namely the decreased sensitivity of mammography for this age group, due to breast density which is more common for women in their 40's. High breast density can often lead to false positives.

Screening for women 50-74 remains the same and is available every two years.

A Reminder That We Still Have Work to Do.

A friend of mine introduced me to a woman a little over a year ago now and I am very grateful for the introduction. I have been inspired by Michelle Pammenter Young every day since. Michelle shares her story much more vividly than I could ever hope to, so I won't try. I will say that Michelle has been living with an Inflammatory Breast Cancer diagnosis and inspiring people every day. Just this weekend she was hit by a devastating blow. She has brain cancer. Please click the link to read through Michelle's story and send your support. She will inspire you, motivate you, and remind you to live every single day to the absolute fullest. She has reminded me that even though I see advances every day, and I hear survivor stories and breakthroughs in breast cancer on a regular basis, we still have a ways to go before we can give all those diagnosed with breast cancer a happy ending.

I am sending Michelle and her family many positive thoughts for this next part of her journey, I hope you will join me.

Michelle has written a book about her journey and you can buy her book here. I encourage you to read it.

Wishing you all health and happiness.

The 411 on Breast Self Exams - Part 2 of 3

An earlier post talked about the importance of screening mammography and who is eligible when. Now we are going to discuss breast self exams. That's right, checking the girls, as some say.

Check out this promo video encouraging women to check their breasts.

It used to be that there was a very specific way to check that was promoted. Now, we just want you to know how things normally look and feel for you. Some changes are simply visual and can not be felt so both looking and feeling are important. If you notice any changes, talk to your doctor. Please know that most changes you find WILL NOT BE BREAST CANCER but it is important to speak to your doctor to rule things out. In fact, 8 out of 10 lumps you find are not cancerous.

I really like this visual from the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation's website found in their breast awareness section here
